fairs and festivals since he was 5 years old. At the age of 7, he opened a show
at the Alabama Theatre in Myrtle Beach,
SC. At 8, he recorded the song “I
Need a New Baseball Song” by Richard Penny and gave it out at a benefit for the
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. At age 11, Adam was asked to sing in WashingtonDC
for SAMSA and later that year opened up for Martina McBride at the Country
Concert.
Adam has performed as a youth
performer at The Country Tonight Theatre in Pigeon Forge, TN for three years
(ages 10-12; over 1200 shows). He hosted and was a singer at The Jukebox
Junction Theatre in Chattanooga, TN in 2008 and opened for James Otto that same year in Georgia. He has

Bear and Banjo Jim
Sunday, August 15~ noon - 2 p.m. Veterans Memorial Stage
The Blue Water Ramblers are lead singers who take turns harmonizing with each
other to create the Blue Water Rambler tapestry of sound. Banjo-Jim Foerch sings of the sailors, farmers,
lumberjacks, politicians and workers. Bear Berends
croons the love songs and delivers protest songs old and new.
Banjo-Jim and Bear
Banjo-Jim
Banjo-Jim Foerch picked up his first banjo in 1965 and hasn't put it down
since. As a founding member of the regional touring band “Beats Settin'
Home,” Banjo-Jim was busy pickin' and singin' all over the Midwest for
20 years between 1982 and 2002. He says singing the songs of Michigan, America
and our lives to all the people we meet on tour is the best thing he's ever
done. “Everyone I ever met here in Michigan or around the Midwest is proud of
our home state and our country. Our songs express that pride the best way we
know how- by getting us all singing together!”
Bear Berends
R. H. “Bear” Berends holds down the rhythm with his big, black six
and twelve string guitars. As with so many baby boomers he started strumming
guitar and singing folk songs in high school in the sixties. He joined
Banjo-Jim and “Beats Settin' Home” at the Wheatland Music Festival
in Remus, Michigan in 1993 and “Da Bearster” hasn't stopped playing and
touring since. "I wanted to sing with Banjo-Jim, so I learned all his songs
and taught him mine and here we are," he explains. Whether delivering the lead
line of a love song or harmonizing with his solid baritone, Bear sculpts the
Blue Water Ramblers’ sound.
At times Banjo-Jim and Bear collaborate with our musical pals. We love adding Tom DeVries with his blazing
mandolin and melodious tenor voice. For that high, lonesome, blue grass sound we bring in California Dan Lynn and his bass
fiddle.

The scent of cedar, maple, even popple smoke hangs on Dave Boutette’s clothes
through summer and into fall without fail. He’s often been called “The Campfire
Kid” by friends trying to make it to dawn around a circle of crackling log wood.
That special intimacy that only comes from sharing firelight is where Dave
Boutette shines. Songs of highway hijinks and wildcat oil drillers in the
Michigan woods are as likely to be heard as old favorites that have been in your
head and heart for years. For Boutette, it’s the sharing of songs that holds all
the magic. Come in, join the circle, sing a tune, stir the coals, or just feel
the warmth. You’re welcome to hang until first light. Just be careful not to
wake the folks in the tents.
Whether banging out a set of saloon songs at a Michigan watering hole, or
settling back for an evening of singing at a fire ring afterward, Dave Boutette
will hold his listeners as long as they keep the lights on or until the rain
starts. Stories, advice, observations, or raffles are as apt to appear during a
performance as are his songs. Blending many schools of American roots and
popular music including folk, blues, swing, and old time country, his songs
testify to the power of true love, rebirth, snow plows, and migrating fish. If
you get the chance, stand next to Dave. Beside feeling taller than you actually
are, you may start to see some things in an entirely new light.
elmoTHUMM : music you know by 5 guys singing... and you'll forget there's no band!
elmoTHUMM can liven up an event with their spirited act and flexibility by performing on stage or in the crowd. Their amplified show brings people in from all around, as they attract listeners from the ones to the one hundreds with their unusual and strong sound. For a personal touch, elmo THUMM strolls down the aisles, fairways, and even parade routes entertaining small clusters of folk and bringing a sound no other group can bring.
Today, you'll find them singing their unique style of classic rock and R&B balanced with oldies to create a show that has to be seen as well as heard. elmoTHUMM continues to innovate with a live percussion tool they have created (the THUMM stick) and a high-energy show that is unmatched. While other groups are going to pre-recorded vocal and drum tracks (we simply consider it "karaoke"), elmoTHUMM keeps doing what they love: SINGING LIVE and UNACCOMPANIED. So get ready to move and have some fun with THUMM 'cause soon they'll be coming to a town near you.
ABOUT THE GUYS...
elmoTHUMM started as a quartet in 1998 featuring the solo voices of Ed Pendleton and Jason Miller combined with the arrangements, harmonies, and rhythms of Greg Vaden and Adam Westmoreland. Paul Ellinger joined the group at the end of the summer of 2000 and the rest, as they say, is history.

Kurt:
Kurt plays guitar and sings. That’s two things at once. That means that he
gets 2 times more money than the rest of the band. He tells us that it’s that
way in every band. He doesn’t let us talk to many people. Or use the
phone.
Scott:
Scott plays keyboards and sings. That’s two things at once. Scott once asked
Kurt why he doesn’t get 2 times the money. Kurt told Scott it’s because his
keyboard sits on a stand. See, Kurt has to carry his guitar on a strap around
his neck and that warrants extra hazard pay. Scott makes people laugh and
over-tips waitresses.
Tom:
Tom plays drums. By our count that’s two things with his hands and two things
with his feet. We’re all afraid to ask Kurt about this
scenario.
Dewey:
Dewey plays bass and sings. That’s two things at once. Dewey once pointed out
to Kurt that he sings and plays an instrument that’s wrapped around his neck and
why doesn’t he get 2 times the money? Kurt showed Dewey how painful having a
guitar strap wrapped around his neck can be. Dewey doesn’t look Kurt in the eye
anymore.
Jim:
Jim only plays guitar. That’s only one thing. But he owns the PA, so he can
make the rest of the band disappear. He gets paid whatever he
wants.
Free
Beer:
This band plays songs written by other people that will make you dance. No
matter how you dance; you’re still only doing one thing.
Gary Weisenburg
Center Street Gazebo
Saturday, August 14, 2010, 2-4 p.m.
Gary brings to his gigs over thirty years of performing
experience. With early training in classical trumpet, he soon discovered a love
for folk, rock and roll, and jazz music, forming his first band at thirteen.
Having
played on commercials and recording projects he became known for his bass
playing as well as his original lead and harmony vocal abilities.
He
is also recognized as a multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger from his
performing and recording associations with many Michigan area artists such as Neil Woodward,
Matt Watroba, and Robert Jones.
You
can currently enjoy Gary
performing his own music as a soloist, as well as with other musicians in two
to six piece bands.
Gary feels blessed to have music in his life and that “after
all these years I’m still enjoying sharing my music and keeping live music
alive.”
Ian Thomas
Center Street Gazebo
Saturday, August 13, 2010, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
For the last ten
years, songster Ian Thomas has been on the road - sometimes in style, sometimes
hitchhiking, other times in an old beat down car. He began playing
on the streets between San Francisco and New Orleans. Since then he’s also been everywhere from Georgia to
Maine and everywhere in between, a hobo traveling the land with an
acoustic guitar slung over his back. There is an old belief that one has to
travel to discover oneself. Learn and listen from the world, and then reconcile
those influences with your own voice.
It is an adage that
the likes of Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson and Bob Dylan all subscribed to. You
can hear all of that in the voice of Ian Thomas, a man whose music traverses the
echoes of 20th-century Americana, yet brings the songs together with a clarity
that is both remarkable and refreshing. Thomas plays the guitar, harmonica, and
kazoo - each with a distinctiveness that drives his flexible performances. As a
live performer, Thomas is clearly picking up the torch of American folk
music.
John has been
playing guitar for over 20 years, starting with bass and then rhythm and lead
guitar. He's got a pretty healthy guitar buying addiction, so the more variety,
the better!The man knows his
guitars.After years of classic rock
bands, John decided to create an acoustic act with a female singer; it was the
type of project he'd thought about doing and wanted to try for a long time.
Linda started out singing in church and
school choirs, musical theater, classic rock bands and, of course, any shower
stall she found herself in. Meeting and working with John has probably been
some of the most rewarding singing she's ever done (or at least that's the
story she's stickin' with right now).
Always happy to croon a sappy ballad or
two, branching out to cover classic and new artists in rock, jazz, blues, country
and soul fulfills the wide scope of interests for this duo.John's guitar playing style is like a
favorite piece of clothing; it makes ya happy, feel great, relax and have a
good time. John and Linda
share a love and passion for music, having fun and making people happy. You'll
hear old favorites, lost gems, and maybe, Kermit the Frog. And the kazoo lessons are free too.

Robin Horlock

ROBIN HORLOCK
Robin Horlock is an anomaly... an irregularity on an already gloriously diverse Detroit music scene. Hailing from England, Horlock is blessed with the perfect combination of Motor City soul and refined British song writing ability. It’s this clash of cultures, this reconvening of 2 great nations, that sets Horlock apart from other Detroit-based singer/song writers. Born in Chelmsford, in the English county of Essex, on September 29th, Horlock started playing music at the age of 10. Shortly after his family relocated to the Detroit area when his father, a Ford employee, was transferred to the city. The creative Detroit air had an impact on the 10 year old, and before long he was writing his own songs. The prodigious young talent was soaking up the sounds of the Beatles, Paul Simon, the Dave Matthews Band, Bob Marley and Oasis and, with time, molding his own sound. Later influences would include Stereophonics, Gomez, the Goo Goo Dolls and Jack Johnson. Having made Detroit his home, though still fiercely proud of his English roots, Horlock forged ahead in a musical direction that would see him attract an enviable fan base across the city. Playing a live show mixing originals and choice covers, Horlock gradually increased the number of original compositions in his set until, within a few short years he was widely considered an artist in his own right. In April 2004, he released his debut album “Risk to Try”. Critically lauded, the record showcased Horlock’s very personal writing style leading Mike Boyle, then of CMJ Magazine, to say “You’re gonna have to wrestle this Robin Horlock CD from me. Wow, what a pleasant surprise.” Melody Baetens of the Detroit News said “A sensitive and talented songsmith, Horlock could be the next John Mayer”. Horlock and his band released “EP” in July 2006 and again the critics were vocal with their praise. Cal Cagno of 89X 88.7FM Detroit said “Poised to take over TRL and your favorite rock club, at the same time, Robin Horlock creates amazing music again!” In January 2009, Horlock released his 2nd full length album, “Music” in a dual CD release party at The Magic Bag in Ferndale, MI, along with fellow Detroit artist Brandon Calhoon. The show was an unprecedented success as the 600-capacity venue was completely sold out, with a line of disappointed fans left stretching around the block unable to get in. The record, itself, sees Horlock shifting musical gears and producing a mature, poignant body of work. The album covers the full spectrum of human emotion, from pain and pleasure to contentment within a relationship and concern with world affairs. Brett Callwood in his Metro Times review said, “Horlock has produced an album that has wide appeal and radio-playability”. Horlock has performed live with Sponge’s Vinnie Dombroski, Ty Stone, Brandon Calhoon, Willy Mason, Air Supply, Blind Melon and will open for Aaron Lewis of Staind on March 6 at The Motor City Casino Soundstage.

Sheila Landis Trio
Sheila Landis, songbird
deluxe, is the Seven-Time Winner of the DETROIT MUSIC AWARDS (DMA)
"Outstanding Jazz Vocalist” Award (1991, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002
& 2003). The Sheila Landis Trio was hailed by the DMA as "Outstanding
Traditional Artist/Group" in 1999 and 2003. Rick Matle plays a burly,
percolating, bluesy 7-string guitar. He shares with Landis the 1999 DMA
"Outstanding Jazz Composers Award".Matle himself was recognized as “Outstanding World Music Songwriter” by
the DMA in 2006 and 2007. He and percussionist Sheridan were both nominated as
“Outstanding Jazz Instrumentalists” by the DMA in 2003 and received a 2004
tip-of-the-hat for “Outstanding Modern Jazz Artist/Group”.
Kick it up a step further
with the exciting addition of World Beat percussionist Dennis Sheridan. This
trio really swings, drawing on traditional jazz influences as well as the
lilting bossa novas and propulsive samba beats of Brazil. Yet another notch up
finds this bold three-some brazenly improvising to modern poetry, enlivening
the heartfelt words of poet Margo LaGattuta and the jazz-inflected musings of
music historian/beat poet Irv Barat. Poetry was the springboard for many of the
pieces on “Riding the Round Pool”, a Matle/Landis CD nominated in the “Outstanding
Jazz Recording” category in the 2003 Detroit Music Awards.
Treat yourself to a
panoply of sounds: Sheila delivering soaring, sweet, mostly improvised,
jazz-tinged vocals interspersed with bird calls and a rare romp on the Hohner
kazoo; Matle strumming, picking and kicking his 7-string guitar, coaxing
otherworldly emanations from his axe with the help of an electronic pedal board
and unorthodox finger picking techniques; Sheridan wailing on a modified drum
kit augmented with conga drums, bongo drums, bells and shakers. Dig his
"dog whines" on the Brazilian cuica!
Poised to jump into the
unknown, yet always ready to embrace the mainstream, the Sheila Landis Trio
incorporates spontaneous improvised musical explorations of poetry, delves deep
into the blues, bebops heartily and then nods to Jimi Hendrix and other pop
music icons. The artistic voyage continues with their 2010 CD release “Heart
Plaza”.
QUOTABLE
QUOTE:
"Sheila
Landis, a lithe, gossamery soprano whose spontaneous
delivery
mimics an improvising horn."
Mark
Stryker, Detroit Free Press Music Writer, as quoted from
The Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival
Program Guide, September 2000.
There are altogether too
few women bandleaders; Sheila Landis is that and more, contributing her own
sinuous compositions to the brew of standards and contemporary selections in
her repertoire. With her high, piping range, arresting choice of notes,
rhythmic sophistication culled from her study of Latin percussion instruments,
Landis has found the perfect vehicle in the trio format in the company of Matle
and Sheridan, her "fearless travelers". To reach a musical vision,
one needs empathetic companions. The Sheila Landis Trio achieves just this
heady synergy.
Sky
Covington is a Detroit jazz singer/songwriter, who ended up establishing a
residency in New Orleans with help from legendary 60’s icon, John Sinclair. Sky
was deeply influenced by that city’s music scene, she turned her poems into
acappella songs. “New Orleans was like boot camp. It stripped me down and taught
me to become more of a real performer’.
It’s difficult to believe she was ever anything less. With a rich, elegant tone
and an easy vibrato- think Billie Holiday, of course, as well as Abbey Lincoln
and Nina Simone. Covington’s a Neo-Soul chanteuse who makes every sound seem personal. By her
unique perspective of
taking her personal issues and threading the sound of her experience with the
delicates of jazz and soul music, Sky cries out on stage… This was the beginning
of her unique persona.. Sky Covington has offered the industry a new story.
